Camping in large beer barrels used to be popular in Czechoslovakia. Some people in 1965 were seen in a newsreel spending some vacation time in Budvar beer barrels that had been converted to little cabins around Hluboká nad Vltavou and České Budějovice in South Bohemia. The practice lasted a long time, as a syndicated news story in the US in 1984 said people could still camp in barrels for about $8 a night. With inflation that would be about $19 today. The article says the barrels held 4,225 gallons of beer, and had been sold off when Budějovický Budvar switched to steel barrels.
