Camping In Barrels - Czechoslovakia (1965)
Camping in large beer barrels used to be popular in Czechoslovakia.
Camping in large beer barrels used to be popular in Czechoslovakia. Some people in 1965 were seen in a newsreel spending some vacation time in Budvar beer barrels that had been converted to little cabins around Hluboká nad Vltavou and České Budějovice in South Bohemia. The practice lasted a long time, as a syndicated news story in the US in 1984 said people could still camp in barrels for about $8 a night. With inflation that would be about $19 today. The article says the barrels held 4,225 gallons of beer, and had been sold off when Budějovický Budvar switched to steel barrels.
