Jan Masaryk Talks About U.S.A. (1947)
A rare film of Czechoslovak Foreign Minister Jan Masaryk speaking English in 1947 shows him praising the United States as a tremendous country where everything is very big.
A rare film of Czechoslovak Foreign Minister Jan Masaryk speaking English in 1947 shows him praising the United States as a tremendous country where everything is very big. He adds the US will remain a leading country in the international arena. Overall he was optimistic the country could solve its post-war problems, but tactfully added that he preferred to worry about his own problems. Masaryk knew the US very well and did odd jobs including piano playing and manual labor there from 1904 until the outbreak of World War I. From 1925 to '38 he was ambassador to Britain but also made trips back to the US. During World War II he was based in London and made radio broadcasts in Czech as the voice of the opposition to the German occupation. Masaryk died in 1948 under circumstances that have never been fully explained, though renewed investigations suggest it was murder, and not suicide.
